Girls Practice Times This Week

Girls Cross Country the Rest of This Week:
Thursday 5:00 Uniforms
Thursday 5:30 Practice
Friday 5:15 Pictures
Friday 5:15 Practice

Thanks to the Sochacki Family for a great time on Wednesday.

We do have a parents meeting later in the week next week. Coach Z will have that for you and your parents today.

We have our first meet a week from Saturday, August 23rd, in Dewitt. We will plan to leave WC by bus (hopefully) at 7:30 a.m.

2008 Cross Country Schedule

Our most up to date schedule (including any reschedules) should be at High School Sports dot Net. If you register for an account, you can then put several sports at WC over top of one another and generate a calendar.

Here is our schedule as we know it right now. Be attentive to the fact that the boys and girls schedules are not exactly the same. Also the boys are still deciding what to do on the last Saturday before regionals. Most likely it will be either Foxes and Hounds or the Shepherd Invite. They also split their team on September 27th, going to Union with reserves and the Carson City Invite with the varsity.

2008 Regional Cross Country Assignments

We return to Sparta for our 2008 Regional. We lose the following schools: Grant, Muskegon Heights, Portland (tied with us for third in girls race last year), Stanton-Montcalm Central and Whitehall (last years champion and now a Division 2 School).

Girls Start 2007 Cross Country

We gain the following schools: Hart, Holton, Wyoming-Godwin Heights, Kelloggsville and Lee.

An early analysis of the regional would suggest that GRWC Boys have a very good possibility of finishing at or near the top of their regional and the girls have a very good chance at finishing in the top three for another trip to the state meet.

Kent City is the most improving program on both the boys and girls side and could give either team a run for their money. Allendale girls are definitely strong and return almost all of their team from a year ago, plus they add one more good runner. Their boys also have a good freshman.

Hope Athletes in Action Camp

We encouraged our athletes to attend this camp again this year. I know a few girls are there and some of the boys. Here is an article that features Tony Schaefer among several others.

Good luck Ryan at continuing your career in college!

Kinney wins Emerging Elite Race at Nike Outdoor Nationals

Excellent and well run race. She would have placed in the Elite race as well.

See Video here.

Monica Kinney runs 2:12.89 at Midwest Distance Gala

Monica Kinney placed 2nd at the Midwest Distance Gala with a time of 2:12.89 for 800 Meters. This is faster than the WC record* and the fastest run by a WC Grad before starting college. She will try to better this mark next week at the Nike Outdoor National Meet.

Falcons win two regional championships!

Both the boys and girls won regional championships on Saturday at Houseman Field. The boys fought hard all day against a quality team from Allendale, but team depth prevailed in the end. On the girls side, they had a little greater margin of error, but they did perform well to get into the 160 point range.

Falcon Boys Win Last City Crown - Girls are Runner-Up But Take 17 of 29 All-Conference Slots

In a meet that featured some highs and lows, the boys team kept piling on the depth points, especially in the distance events with the formidable trio of Gravelyn, Schaefer and Scott. In the end they were supported by the sprinters and field events that showed some depth at Houseman on Friday night and they prevailed over a tough Christian High Boys Team.

The girls took 17 of the 29 all conference slots (some were multiple winners) include three of four relays, both hurdle races, the 800, 1600 and 400. Perhaps the only bad news of the night was that Kelly Morrissey broke her new vaulting pole in warm-ups, causing some minor cuts to her hands that made it hard to grip the pole. She jumped to a second place finish, but did not have her usual night. Unfortunately (for the Falcons anyway) we just didn’t have the total team depth to match GR Christian stride for stride in the middle of the races and we were outpaced by them.

Complete results are here.

Kinney Seventh Fastest 800 Runner In Michigan for 2008

Monica Kinney came off Friday’s Conference Meet with another goal in mind, to see how fast she could go on Saturday at a meet in Williamston. The race featured three of the top five returning 800 meter runners in the state. Monica followed coaching given to her and learned a lot about herself in the process. Her second place time of 2:17.2 made her the seventh fastest 800 meter runner in the state thus far this year.

BOYS TRACK

1. East Kentwood — The Falcons are loaded this year, and are primed to make a run at a Division 1 state championship.

2. Greenville — The Yellow Jackets are well balanced, led by speedster Jake Sanders and hurdler Chris Stretton.

3. Sparta — Always strong in distance events, this year the Spartans have speed in Brandon VanDriel and a deep distance crew led by Nate Dahlgren.

4. Grand Rapids Christian — Big win against West Catholic last week put the Eagles in the City League driver’s seat.

5. Grandville — Big win against Rockford on Tuesday.

6. Rockford — The Rams need to regroup after losses against East Kentwood and Grandville the past week.

7. Zeeland West — Winning the Frank Grimm Relays late last month put the Dux on the map.

8. Hudsonville — The Eagles are strong, but run in a very tough O-K Red.

9. Kenowa Hills — The Knights have had a breakout year, led by distance runner Reed Kamyszek and sprinter Kurt Van Essen.

10. West Catholic — The Falcons may have lost to GR Christian last week, but will be a force in Division 3.

Results of the Final — forever — City League Dual Track Meets 5/5/2008

Well it was a sad day tonight as some great rivalries finished the last dual meet in the league history. WC got a pair of fairly easy wins. Next year probably won’t happen very often, but it got us the opportunity to get lots of kids on the track and many got additional qualifier times/distances in their events.
