Leikert to Run In Conference Championship Today

Chris will represent Aquinas in the conference meet this morning at Riverside at 11.

Tony in Madrigal Article

Want to know how it went down? Ask the guy who finished fifth, he relaxed for a second and Tony and the others hit the “gas”. Tony ran perhaps his perfect race to win the title.

Girls Tenth and Sydow Finishes Fourth

Clearly establishing herself as the unquestioned second fastest girl in WC history, Olivia Sydow finished fourth overall today at MIS.

The girls team ran to a tenth place finish.

Sydow’s cousin Mike
took 39th in the boys D4 race by the way.

Boys Fifth and Schafer wins it all at MIS - 11/1/2008

Tony Schafer blew by the field in the last mile and extended his lead in the final 400 meters to secure the victory. Only the second WC athlete to win a state championship in cross country, he was fifth overall based on time.

The team wound up in fifth place.

Nice Article on the OK Blue Championships

Quotes both Tony and Olivia and Sparta gives us some love for helping them with their conference title on the girls side. WC boys held off a fast charging Cedar team on the boys side. Nice pictures of them in the print edition too.

Girls Second if First Blue Conference Meet

The girls cross country team brought their attitude yesterday to Cedar Springs and knocked off FHN to avenge their regular season loss. They finished ten points behind Sparta who ran a great race. Final score, Sparta 43, West 53, FHN 68, Cedar 113 and then everybody else.

Winning the overall OK Blue individual title was Senior Olivia Sydow who finishes her OK Blue season undefeated!

Also placing for the Falcons were:
5. Olivia. Quam
9. Kelsey. Carpenter
16. Katie. Sochacki
22. Jill. Pindar
23. Sarah. Thimmesch
and
25. Erika. Buczkowski

Based upon their finishes, it appears that both Sydow and Quam will earn first team all conference and Carpenter will earn honorable mention all conference honors.

Excellent first season in the Blue for the Lady Falcons.

For directions, basically it is just north and east of 131 intersecting with I94 as shown here. Distance wise it is exactly the same as Portage, just north instead of south of 131.

Go 131 South to I94 East to Oakland North to Kilgore East to the road. There is some parking in front of the school. You can also park just east of the school on the residential streets.

We plan to board the bus and depart fairly quickly after the warm down.

Portage Invite

The bus leaves at 6:55 sharp! It goes both ways.

Best way to go is 131 South to Centre Avenue, left to Moorsbridge and left on Moorsbridge to the school. You’ll know you are there by the huge crowds. They have some parking for a few $ or you can park in the surrounding residential neighborhoods and walk in. It is not uncommon to park a mile away. It’s a zoo. See the map on The Portage Site. Check that site as the week develops as they update it in case of traffic issues later in the week. Parking is also very full there, so leave early and wear walking shoes. This is one of the neatest races we go to and the girls should really have some fun.

Directions to Belding Lightening Bend Park

google maps - try 1200 Merrick Street - don’t use google’s directions per Belding’s coach

FROM: Grand Rapids AREA:

take Belding Road EAST (also known as M-44) all the way to Belding
as you come to the edge of town you will pass a Burger King and then a Subway and then a BC Pizza - keep going until Bridge Street
take M-44 EAST to Bridge Street (Marathon and Wesco on the corner and the one traffic light that is in town)
turn LEFT onto Bridge Street and NORTH for 8 blocks to Congress Street
turn RIGHT onto Congress St. and go EAST for three blocks
at the deadend turn LEFT onto Wilson St. and go NORTHEAST (I don’ think there is a street sign)
as you go over the river the street changes names to Ashfield Street
go up the steep hill (you are heading north) for three blocks
turn RIGHT onto Merrick Street and go EAST for three long blocks to the park; d

The park is just past the intersection of Gooding and Merrick, it is across the street from Belding Tank Technologies (a huge underground tank storage company, they own the land on the front half of the park). The entrance to the park is on the 1200 block of Merrick Street.

Girls Finish Second in 2008 Fruitport Invite

The girls had a great day on Saturday with 12 of 19 athletes running season personal records on Saturday and two running career pr’s. For Anna Leikert it was great to see her break a time achieved in 2006 after being injured some in 2007 she is back to health and about to leap forward it appears. Sarah Thimmesch also set a career pr on Saturday, eclipsing the mark established by her just one week earlier at the Cougar Falcon Invite.

Only the girls! Boys are splitting between Union High School and Carson City (where 46 ranked teams are competing!).

This year the girls run at 9:45. We will ride the bus both ways. Leave WC at 8:00 sharp. We will be back at WC before noon.

To get there, take 96 West.
Get off at Fruitport Exit.
Go South on Airline Road/3rd Street through Fruitport
Turn right at the south end of town on Park Street which will become Fruitport Road. Near corner is 5/3rd Bank Branch and far corner is a park.
Take that to the park on your right side about three or four miles down, more or less.

Jimmy McKiever Keeps Schafer as his Goal

“Tony Schafer from West Catholic, he has always beaten me by a ton, but every race I go out and my goal is to beat him. I want to stick with him as long as I can.” Jimmy is a great kid.
